Habitat for Humanity on SU Quad

Students at universities across the country built shacks on their quads from pre-assembled wooden parts. The Habitat for Humanity event, or Shack-a-thon as it is better known as, is supposed to help raise student awareness of the poverty problems in the United States. The idea is that if students live for three days in a wood shack without heat, running water, accessible food, or the other amenities Americans tend to take for granted. The hope is the students involved will begin to understand what life is like for Americans who are forced to live in these conditions every day.

The student coordinator we spoke to said the idea was not only to educate the people involved, but also to grab the attention of the people who walk by the shacks.

What NCC news noticed during filming was a lot of students and faculty walked by the build project, glanced at the shacks, and then kept on walking. It seems like the oddity of small houses on the quad caught the people's attention, but did not seem to hold it for very long.

The Shack-a-thon started on October 1st, and ended on October 3rd. The shacks were then taken off the quad, and donated to local non-profit charities, and religious centers.
